Program Highlights

Voices of Change Project

In this powerful group activity, students take on the role of changemakers by identifying pressing societal issues and developing strategies to address them. Working together, students choose a topic they are passionate about, conduct thorough research, and create an organization designed to inspire positive social change. This project fosters collaboration, critical thinking, and leadership as each group member contributes their unique skills toward the shared goal of making a difference. At the culmination of the project, students present their work and explore how to bring their ideas to life beyond the conference.

For example, JrNYLC alumni Brandon Greene transformed his Voices of Change project into a real organization, A Better Community, to combat bullying. He was honored for his work and invited to the White House to meet President Obama.

Workshops and Simulations

Through engaging hands-on activities, immersive simulations, and practical workshops, students will actively participate in leadership exercises designed to elevate their learning experience. The program’s focus on tactile practice ensures students not only learn about leadership but also put these skills into action. Whether they’re creating a Mission Statement, delivering a Public Service Announcement, or tracing the Roots of Leadership in U.S. history, every activity is crafted to strengthen their leadership abilities. By participating directly in these interactive experiences, students develop confidence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, allowing them to lead with purpose both now and in the future.

Historic Site Visits*

At JrNYLC, students have the unique opportunity to visit historic sites across three important locations—Washington, D.C., Atlanta, and Boston—each offering rich insights into American history and the legacy of great leaders.

Washington, D.C.: Heart of American Government

Students explore Mount Vernon, the U.S. Capitol, iconic monuments, the National Museum of American History, and the White House to learn about the foundations of U.S. leadership and government.

Atlanta: Civil Rights

Students visit the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, National Center for Civil and Human Rights, Atlanta History Center, and MLK National Historical Park to better understand human rights and the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement.

Boston: Birthplace of American Independence

In Boston, students visit Plimoth Patuxet Museums, Salem, and the Freedom Trail to experience early American history, justice, and the key sites of the American Revolution.

Life on a College Campus 

Between attending exclusive speaking events with influential leaders and walking in the footsteps of many bright emerging leaders before them, students at JrNYLC will experience what life is like on a university campus. This immersive experience offers students more than just a glimpse into higher education—it provides them the chance to connect with like-minded, ambitious peers from across the country. Together, they’ll explore history, engage in thoughtful discussions, and learn from each other’s unique perspectives, creating a collaborative environment that nurtures both academic and personal growth.
